There are few places left in the world like Ladakh. It lies in the great Himalayan Rain Shadow, so receives no Monsoon during the summer. In summer it is high, arid forests surrounded by vast peaks and trisected by the swift, snow laden India and Zanskar rivers. The landscape resembles Tibet and Is often referred as " Little Tibet".
Zanskar
Approach- About 465 kms from Leh (Ladakh) via Kargil and Trek over Shingula pass from Darcha.
About 20 kms south-east of Rangdum stands the Pazila watershed across which lies Zanskar, the most isolated of all the trans- himalayan valleys. The Penzila Top (4400 m) is a picturesque table land adorned with two small alpine lakes and surrounded by snow covered peaks. As the Zanskar road winds down the steep slopes of the watershed to the head of the Stod Valley, one of the Zanskar's main tributary valleys, the majestic "Drang Drung" glacier looms into full view. A long and winding river of ice and snow, the "Drang Drung" is perhaps the largest glacier in Ladakh, outside the Siachin formation. It is from the cliff- like snout of this extensive glacier that the Stod or Doda river, the main tributary of River Zanskar, rises.
