Pradesh is essentially a mountain state- it takes in the transition zone
from the plains to the high Himalaya and in the trans Himalayan region of
Lahul and Spiti actually crosses that mighty barrier to the Tibetian
Plateau. It a delightful state for visitors, particularly during the hot
season when people flock to its hill stations to escape the searing heat of
the plains. High points for the visitors include Shimla, the summer capital of British India. The Kullu Valley is simply one of the most beautiful areas on earth - a lush, green valley with the sparkling Beas River running through it and the snow capped Himalayan peaks forming the background. From Manali the trip alone the spectacular mountain road to Leh is Dharamsala, home in exile for the Dalai Lama, and a host of other hill stations, Lakes, walks and mountains. The 4500 metre Kunzum Pass connects the Lahul and Spiti Valleys. There are few settlement in this barren, high region . Kaza is the main village and district headquarter of Spiti. Slightly north- west of it is Kibar, which at 4205 meters is reputed to be the highest village in the world. Tabo , Ki and Dhankar are the most important monasteries in this Buddhist area. This dramatic region is connected by the Indo Tibet highway to Kinnaur and Shimla.
